Dogs maul abandoned baby to death in Webuye

Residents of Misimo village in Webuye East constituency were shocked on Friday when they found dogs mauling the body of a newborn baby.

The 16-year old mother of the deceased, Alice Sibweche, gave birth to the infant and threw it away. A pack of dogs later found the baby and attacked it.

The baby’s body was later recovered by locals at a homestead in Lukusi village and police officers moved it to Webuye District Hospital Mortuary.

The girl, who is a student at Machakha Primary School, was arrested and taken to district hospital where the medics proved that she had indeed given birth.

Sibweche was arraigned in court later in the day and she admitted that she had thrown away the child.  Addressing the resident magistrate, William Orwa, Sibweche appealed for leniency citing that she needed to continue with her studies.

Judge Orwa ordered for an age of the girl, and he directed that she should be detained at Kakamega Children’s Home till August 6, 2015 when he will give  his verdict.
