Dont sign performance contracts, KNUT tells teachers

Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) has urged teachers to ignore the signing of performance contracts, saying the union and other key education stakeholders have not been adequately involved in the process.

Speaking during a by-election for Kisii South’s KNUT branch chairperson, KNUT’s second national chairperson, Wycliffe Omucheyi, said that said that the exercise was aimed at crippling teachers unions and sabotaging promotions.

Touching on the disputed teachers’ health scheme, Omucheyi said the union will not accept the plan as it does not offer substantial service to teachers.

The KNUT official said the union will continue to push the Teachers’ Service Commission (TSC) until it releases the union dues that have been withheld since September last year.

The Kisii South KNUT branch’s by-election, which was held at St. Peters Suneka Secondary School, saw John Makori beat his only opponent, Victor Ombasa by 28 votes.

Makori garnered 307 votes to Ombasa’s 279.

In January, the TSC announced that teachers would start signing performance contracts in what it termed as efficiency monitoring plan.

KNUT and Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (Kuppet), have, however, opposed the plan.
