The Samburu local administration has launched an intensive operation to ensure children of school-going age are enrolled in school.

The operation, led by local chiefs from Samburu North, East and Central, is targeting boys and girls who have been subjected to child labour and harmful cultural practices.

In Maralal, acting chief Selina Lemakara said her office in conjunction with members of the Nyumba Kumi initiative had nabbed several children hawking milk in Maralal town.

“Today, Wednesday we have started an operation of looking for children who have never gone to school despite that they have reached the age of school going,” said Lemakara.

She said that some of the girls supposed to be in school are already beaded a sign that they had already been booked for marriage.
