Dorm razed down in morning fire

By Daniel Korir

Property worth Ksh4 million was destroyed after flames engulfed a Laboroti Boys High dormitory of school in Nandi County on Wednesday morning.

The fire, which residents suspect was caused by an electric fault, started at about 5:00am, when students were already attending morning preps.

Nobody was hurt in the morning inferno, but 162 students lost the belongings in the fire.

Mosop Member of Parliament Stephen Bittok and Nandi Senator Stephen Sang visited the school and urged the Nandi County Government to speed up the procurement of fire-fighting equipment.

They faulted the county government for being sluggish in purchasing the equipment despite having budgeted Ksh50 million for fire trucks.

The leaders cited Labuiywo fire tragedy that claimed three children’s lives, pointing out that swift fire response and availability of fire-fighting equipment could prevent future loss of lives.

Senator Sang called on the Ministry of Education to equip schools with fire extinguishers. He said fire extinguishers should be installed in all educational institutions as a precautionary measure.

The Senator added that fire response trainings should be conducted in schools with students, teachers and all school staff being targeted.

This is not the first fire incident in the region in recent months. Other incidents have taken place at Chepterit Shopping Centre, Samoei Secondary School, Lelmokwo Secondary and Kingwal Swamp.
