DP Ruto cancels Nyamira visit amid chaos, faults police

Deputy President William Ruto has cancelled his Nyamira visit that was scheduled to take place on Thursday.

The decision comes after hours of confrontations between police and the DP’s supporters who had gathered at Kebirigo Primary School.

“After consultations with MPs Kemosi, Mose,Nyamoko, the bodaboda sacco and church leadership who had invited us, we have postponed the two functions in Nyamira County to Thursday next week,” Dr. Ruto said on Twitter.

He lashed out at the police criticising them for ‘disruptively’ dispersing residents and termed the move as unnecessary.

The DP was to lead a fundraiser for boda boda riders in in West Mugirango Constituency and women groups in Miriri Kitutu Masaba.

MPs allied to the Deputy President accused Interior CS Fred Matiang’i of sabotaging the visit.

They include Vincent Kemosi (West Mugirango), Shadrack Mose (Kitutu Masaba), Joash Nyamoko (North Mugirango) and Sylvanus Osoro (South Mugirango).

Four days ago, police officers lobbed tear gas outside the AIPCA Kenol Church where DP Ruto was attending another fundraising event.

Similar to the turn of events in Nyamira, chaos had preceded his arrival with youth groups clashing at Kenol town.

Transport on the busy Kenol-Murang’a road was paralysed for several hours.

Videos from the incident showed tires smouldering on the road and motorists cowering from a volley of stones.

One person was killed and several others left nursing serious injuries.

The DP who was hosted by Kandara MP Alice Wahome arrived at around 10 am when calm had been restored and the church service began shortly after.
