DP Ruto contradicts Energy CS Keter on power connectivity fee

Deputy President William Ruto now says the reduction of power connection fee from 35,000 to 15,000 shillings for those living close to power transformers will take effect from April 2nd.

This announcement by Ruto contradicts Energy Cabinet Secretary Charles Keter, who said earlier this week the fee reduction would take effect immediately.

The DP was speaking at ELCK Church in Itierio, Kisii County, during a fundraiser, where he called on parents to ensure their children acquire proper education to reduce poverty levels.

Ruto further pledged that Ogembo District Hospital will be upgraded to reduce congestion at Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital, which will also get a supply of equipment worth 700 million shillings.

On Wednesday, Energy Cabinet Secretary Charles Keter announced that Kenyans applying for electricity connectivity from March 16th, 2016 will pay 15,000 shillings down from 35,000 shillings to be connected to the power grid.

Keter, however, said this fee will only apply to power connections within a 600-metre radius from an existing power transformers.

The CS said Kenya Power has already received 5,000 applications but there will be no refund for those who had already applied and paid 35,000 shillings before Wednesday’s announcement.

In May 2015, President Uhuru Kenyatta launched the last mile connectivity for all primary schools and announced an immediate reduction of the connection fee from Ksh 35,000 to Ksh 15,000 payable in installments.

He said a total of 5,320 transformers (40,000 by 2017) would be distributed all over the country to roll out the project and urged Kenyans to take advantage of the project for economic enhancement.
