DP Ruto fails to meet ex-President Moi after two-hour wait

Deputy President William Ruto was on Thursday forced to wait for close to two hours to meet former President Daniel Moi after he paid him a courtesy call.

But the scheduled meeting came to naught after Mr Ruto was told he couldn’t meet Moi as he had a doctor’s appointment.

Ruto, accompanied by Energy Cabinet Secretary Charles Keter, Ainabkoi Member of Parliament William Chepkut and and Lawyer Stephen Kipkenda visited Moi at his Kabarak home in Nakuru.

“Former President Mzee Daniel arap Moi was visited today by Deputy President His Excellency William Ruto at his Kabarak home. Ruto who was accompanied by Energy CS Charles Keter, Ainabkoi MP William Chepkut and lawyer Stephen Kipkenda were welcomed and had lunch at Mzee’s Kabarak home,” read a statement from Mr. Moi’s office.

“Unfortunately, this coincided with the time Mzee Moi was undergoing routine physical exercise with his doctors. Mzee Moi agreed to meet the visitors at convenient time another day in the very near future.”

Deputy President flew to Moi’s home at around noon, shortly after presiding over the official launch of the Rapid Results Initiative program at the Kenya School of Government in Nairobi.

Sources close to the DP said prior to the visit, Ruto had sought official audience with the former president and the appointment was confirmed on Tuesday, May 2.

The botched meeting will not be a good look for Ruto politically especially after Moi met with ODM leader Raila Odinga recently.

Some in Ruto’s camp have said the incident is an attempt to humiliate Mr. Ruto, who is rocked in a political kinsmanship contest with the former president’s son; Baringo Senator Gideon Moi.
