DP Ruto in meeting with allies at Karen residence for BBI consensus building

Deputy President William Ruto is presently holed up in a meeting with allies at his Karen residence for consensus-building on the constitutional reforms occasioned by the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) bill.

Among leaders who have already arrived for the meeting include MPs Caleb Kositany (Soy), Moses Kuria (Gatundu South), and Aisha Jumwa (Malindi).

Governors present include Jackson Mandago (Uasin Gishu), Josphat Nanok (Turkana), Stephen Sang (Nandi), Moses Lenolkulal (Samburu) as well as Nominated Senator Millicent Omanga among others.

DP Ruto is in a dilemma on whether to fully back the BBI initiated constitutional reforms or oppose it altogether.

The deputy president, who was in Nakuru on Tuesday, intensified his push for consensus before the anticipated 2021 referendum with BBI proponents insistent on having their way and telling Ruto and his allies to join the ‘No’ side if they find parts of the proposal unacceptable.

DP Ruto, speaking in Nakuru during the burial of Bahati MP Kimani Nginjiri’s mother, said there must not be winners and losers in the process and that a win-win situation is possible to achieve.

“We must not have winners and losers, we can fashion a win-win. Tunataka mambo watu wote wakubaliane, na inawezekana, tusiskume mtu kwa sababu ako na maoni tofauti, that’s not the way to go forward. Kuna watu katika hii mambo ya BBI wanatafuta sana vile ya kugawanyisha watu, tutafute mahali ya sisi sote kutembea pamoja,” he said.

Even as DP Ruto appears to falter in his opposition to the BBI process, his allies maintain that the document is suspicious and has been rushed to cater for selfish interests ahead of the 2022 General Election.

The Wednesday meeting between the DP and his allies is expected to give a way forward on whether ‘Team Hustler’ will mount a No campaign, support the BBI or simply fence-sit and refrain from participating in activities related to the referendum.
