DP Ruto says he will work with all leaders no matter their party

Deputy President William Ruto has said he will work with all leaders irrespective of their political affiliations.

He noted that development will be elusive if leaders are not united.

“As MCAs (members of county assemblies), you are leaders at the grassroots who are well placed to help the Government implement its development projects, especially the Big Four agenda. We will work together for the sake of now and the future,” he said.

He was responding to MCAs who vowed to oppose any move to interfere with devolution in case of a referendum.

The county leaders from Kakamega, Elgeyo Marakwet and Baringo met with the DP at his Sugoi home in Uasin Gishu on Friday.

They had dismissed calls from a section of politicians that the number of MCAs be reduced.

“It is unbelievable that the same leaders who supported the 2010 Constitution have now turned against the same laws since it has not favoured them as far as leadership is concerned. We will defend the current structure of devolution,” said Mr. Farouk Machanje, the Kakamega County Assembly Deputy Speaker.

Dr. Ruto however responded saying if Kenyans decide to amend the Constitution, he will support the move but only for amendments that enhance devolved units.

“I want to assure you that I will support any discussion on how to enhance devolution and increase its allocation but not to create some positions at the top level alone,” said Dr Ruto.

He added that devolution has transformed lives of majority of Kenyans in rural areas despite the challenges it is facing.

The Deputy President maintained that he is not opposed to a referendum.

“I have a right to give my opinion on the proposed referendum just like any other Kenyan. In fact, I have no problem with presidential or parliamentary system of governance so long as Kenyans decide,” said Dr Ruto.

Water Cabinet Secretary Simon Chelugui, Baringo Governor Stanley Kiptis and speaker David Kerich were also present.
