DP Ruto trashes ODMs anti-IEBC protests threats

Deputy President, William Ruto, now says there will be no vacuum at the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) when the current team leaves office.

DP Ruto said the process of hiring the new team of commissioners is on course and will be complete before the current one leaves office.

The Deputy President told the opposition, Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (CORD), to stop issuing threats of demonstration on matters pertaining to IEBC and instead support the ongoing efforts to have new commissioners in office within the shortest time possible.

“The process of getting new commissioners at the IEBC is going on well and I wonder why some leaders are issuing threats of demonstrations on a matter that is almost complete,” said Ruto.

Addressing wananchi at Nyansira Secondary School grounds in Nyaribari Chache Constituency, Kisii County on Friday, Ruto said the opposition should stop unnecessary complications on matters pertaining to IEBC.

This comes just a day after the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) threatened to resume its protests against IEBC if the commissioners do not vacate office by Friday, September 30, 2016.

Speaking in Kilgoris on Thursday, September 29, ODM chair, John Mbadi, pleaded with the party leader, Raila Odinga, to allow them to return to the streets in a bid to force the commissioners out.

“If by Friday,September 30, 2016 the commissioners will not have left office, I ask you baba (Raila) to allow us to return to the streets to force them out because that is the only language they understand,” he said.

A report made by Joint Parliamentary Select Committee recommended that the commissioners vacate office by September 30 to pave way for a new commission to take office.
