Deputy President William Ruto has said the government is working round the clock to combat the spread of the virus and revive the economy.

Taking to Twitter, DP Ruto assured Kenyans that stimulus package announced by the Head of State will help cushion them against effects of COVID-19.

“We are determined to do everything within our God given capabilities to check the spread and defeat Covid-19 and the GoK economic stimulus package will mitigate the economic damage caused. We stand with those being treated. Quick recovery gallant soldier of the Lord Bishop Wanjiru,” his tweet reads.

DP Ruto’s statement comes a day after 31 more people tested positive for coronavirus bringing the total to 1192.

During a Press briefing at State House, President Uhuru Kenyatta said the Health Ministry has so far tested a cumulative of 57,650 samples.

The Head of State reiterated that the rate of infections may surge upwards if Kenyans fail to comply with the protocols issued by the MOH.

Some of the directives from the ministry include staying at home; avoiding large gatherings; limiting non-essential travel; cessation of movement in parts of the country; enhanced personal hygiene by regular hand washing or using sanitizer as well as wearing of masks.

“Our nation is made up of over 70% young people. Although this gives me hope, because a young population is better equipped to fight the coronavirus, it also worrying. Worrying because, during a pandemic like the one we have, the sheer energy of our young population will fight the virus, alright. But in the process, their energy could also be misdirected,” said the Head of State.

President Kenyatta announced that the government will engage young people in the National Hygiene Programme – Kazi Mtaani Initiative which has been allocated Ksh. 10billion.

He further announced the rolling out of the 8-point Economic Stimulus Programme, amounting to a total of Ksh. 53.7billion.
