DP William Ruto laughs off Governor Mutua threat claims

Deputy President William Ruto has laughed off claims by Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua that he allegedly threatened him.

DP Ruto, speaking on Sunday in Busia County, downplayed the allegations intimating that the mere thought of it is a non-issue.

“Yule jamaa mwingine mliskia alilalamika juzi, ati nilimsalimia…ati nilifanya nini…(laughs)…ati nilimsalimia tu nikamwangalia, akakimbia kunishtaki kwa polisi. Kama angesalimiwa na huyu jamaa amekuwa akikoroga pot hapa si angekimbia Hague…” he said.

Governor Alfred Mutua last week recorded a statement at Kilimani Police Station accusing DP Ruto, National Assembly Majority Leader Aden Duale and his Senate counterpart Kipchumba Murkomen of threatening him with unspecified consequences for allegedly criticizing them.

According to Mutua, the three made the threats against his life on two separate occasions at State House, Nairobi.

“On Monday November 25, 2019, as the party leader Maendeleo Chap Chap, I was at State House to witness President Uhuru Kenyatta receive the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) report. While waiting for the function to start, I was conversing with fellow leaders and politely greeted Aden Duale who was engaged in a conversation with Onesmus Kipchumba Murkomen,” said Mutua.

“They told me that I have a habit of attacking them. When I asked them how they told me ‘we will teach you a lesson because you have been attacking Deputy President William Ruto.’”

The Machakos County boss further claimed that Duale, who also doubles up as the Garissa Township Member of Parliament, told him that there are over 50,000 Kambas in his constituency and he “can deal with them” as a way to punish him.

“On the evening of Wednesday December 11, 2019, I was a guest at State House for a banquet in honor of the Barbados Prime Minister Mia Motley. I was standing in conversation with Raila Odinga and other leaders,” he narrated.

“Someone came to speak to Raila and as I turned to go and speak to another leader I came face to face with Deputy President William Ruto and I extended my hand to greet him.”

Mutua added that DP Ruto allegedly grabbed and held on to his hand and told him “you fellow, you have been attacking me very much…I must now crush you…I will crush you.”

The governor stated that he informed Raila Odinga as well as four other senior government officials present at the event about the threats because “I believe that William Ruto is serious and capable of carrying out his threat to my life and general welfare.”

Duale and Murkomen however termed the claims by Mutua as Vipindiree (theatrics), adding that the Machakos Governor was trying to seek attention through the outrageous allegations.
