DPP Haji directs IG Boinett to commence probe into Kericho accident

Director of Public Prosecutions Noordin Haji has directed Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinett to commence investigation into the Fort Ternan bus crash that led to the loss of 56 lives.

In a letter dated October 11, 2018, DPP Haji directed that the investigations cover all government agencies responsible for road safety.

“In exercise of the powers conferred upon me under Article 157 (4) of the Constitution of Kenya, I hereby direct that you cause investigation into the matter to determine the persons who may have, through acts of commission or omission, contributed directly or indirectly into the occurrence of the same,” wrote Haji.

“The investigation should be extended to cover all agencies of the government charged with the responsibility of ensuring safety on our roads as well as the owners of the subject motor vehicle.”

The DPP further directed IG Boinett to submit the file after completion of investigations to his office “for appropriate directions.”

This comes after a court on Thursday ordered the detention of two suspects pending a ruling on Friday after police requested to be granted seven more days to complete investigations into the Kericho accident.

Chief Magistrate Samuel Wahome directed that Bernard Ishindu, owner of Home Boys bus registered under Western express Sacco and Cleophas Shimanyula alias Toto be remanded at Londiani Police Station.

IG Boinnet had earlier on also put on notice all traffic police officers who were on duty on the route plied by the bus that killed 56 people at Fort Ternan area in Kericho County.
