DPP Haji orders NHIF boss, 13 senior staff be charged with conspiracy

The Director of Public Prosecution Noordin Haji has ordered senior bosses from the National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) be charged with conspiracy to defeat justice.

NHIF chief executive Geoffrey Gitau Mwangi was arrested on Friday evening alongside the Director of Finance Wilbert Kurgat.

“I have reviewed the file submitted by the DCI (Directorate of Criminal Investigations) and upon consideration of the evidence on record, I am satisfied that there is sufficient evidence to support the charges,” the DPP said in a statement.

They are also to be charged with disobedience of lawful orders contrary to section 131 of the Penal Code.

Mwangi and Kurgat were reportedly summoned to the DCI headquarters and arrested shortly after.

Twelve other suspects are also expected to be charged on Monday, November 26 when they are are arraigned in court.

They include: Gilbert Gathuo Kamau (Director Information Technology), Nichodemus Odongo (Director Strategy Planning and Marketing), Dinah Kirwa (Director Corporate Services), Gibson Kamau Muhoho (Head of Registration, Compliance and Operations) and Johnstone Ouma (Procurement Officer).

Also on the list are Hannah Waitherero Muriithi, Grace Gathoni Kimani, Naomi Aluoch, Gilbert Osoro and Kimulwon Bultut Chesaina.
