DPP Seeks Harsher Penalties for Lizs Attackers

The DPP said that while the verdict rendered justice to the girl, popularly known as Liz, the sentence was lenient considering the gravity of the crime.

The DPP was reacting to a ruling by a Busia Court that found the three accused guilty of rape and assault and sentenced each of them to 15 years in jail for rape and 7 years for assault.

The victim is said to have been raped by six suspects when she was on her way home from a burial in Busia. She was then dumped and left for dead.

CAUGHT THE ATTENTION OF ACTIVISTS

The incident caught the attention of activists across the country who started protests both in Nairobi and Busia to push for a harsher penalty for the suspects after police ordered them to mow a lawn as punishment before setting them free.

The other three suspects are still at large with police carrying out a manhunt to bring them to book.

In a statement sent to newsrooms, the DPP expressed disappointment that to date, three of the co-accused have never been nabbed in spite of the various warrants of arrest.
