Drama as Kirinyaga Woman-Rep is locked out of childrens home

Drama unfolded on Sunday morning at Kianyaga Children’s Home in Kirinyaga County after the area Women Representative, Purity Ngirici, who wanted to present gifts to the children, barred entry.

Ms. Ngirici, who had visited the children’s home last weekend as her son celebrated his 14th birthday, had promised to bring gifts to the children this Sunday.

On arriving at the institution today, she was locked outside the gate sparking a standoff with the management. Some of her supporters would, however, not take the apparent humiliation lying down.

A video capturing the incident showed one of the supporters breaking the padlock at the gate using a hammer before the legislator’s team gained entry into the premises.

Ms. Ngirici had brought the children 180 pairs of shoes, 180 mattresses among other goods.

Confirming the incident, Gichugu OCPD Hussein Hassan said the management had at first declined to receive the gifts but the woman-rep remained put and could not leave with the items.

The Chief Officer at the children’s home accused the MP of failing to follow protocol during her visit to the institution.

“We have a policy as a department or county government. Anything that has to be donated to this home must follow the right channel and protocol. The security of the children is of paramount importance we cannot just allow anybody to come from the blues into the children’s home,” he said.

“Even for the elected leaders. This home operates on a policy and anything donated here must be registered.

The woman representative dismissed the officer’s stand accusing the children’s home management of being roped into local politics.

“Where is the registration book showing everyone who has come here? I have seen many people come here. This is cheap politics and you people are not going to gain from it,” said Ngirici.

The gifts were later accepted after which Ms. Ngirici left for a church service at ACK St. Thomas cathedral, Kerugoya.

Supporters of the woman rep claimed that the children’s home management had been instructed by some local leaders not to allow Ms. Ngirici into the premises.
