Drama as man breaks out of police cell, escapes with two guns

Police are hunting for a 26-year-old man who broke out of a police cell in Elgeyo Marakwet County and escaped with two G3 rifles.

The suspect; Abel Kilimo Rop, was arrested on Monday and locked up at Tot Police Station for allegedly stealing and attempting suicide.

According to the police, the suspect had been handcuffed but he allegedly managed to slip his hands from the handcuffs.

He then reportedly took advantage of absence of officers at the post to ransack the building, accessing two G3 rifles with four fully-loaded magazines placed under a bed in the room assigned to the Officer in Charge of the Police Post (OCPP), Sergeant Wycliffe Juma Makhanu.

On sensing danger, the OCPP is reported to have locked the main door of the post from outside but the suspect opened fire and escaped.

“Alarm was raised and back up requested from the neighboring Pokot side Chesogon Administration Police post who however found the suspect had already escaped,” reads a police report on the incident.

The suspect was still on the run by the time of publishing this article.
