Man climbs communication mast, strips naked to evade arrest

Residents of Majengo estate in Embu town were Sunday morning treated to a rare scene after a man climbed a communication mast to evade arrest.

Eyewitnesses said the man, who was accompanied by another, gained access to the mast by scaling the perimeter wall which is topped with electrified razor wire.

When the alarm went off, one of the men climbed the mast to evade arrest while the other was arrested and taken to Embu Police Station.

Worshipers at a nearby church were forced to abandon prayers as they rushed to the scene.

“It was at around 3 am while we were worshiping and we heard an alarm. We rushed outside and we were shocked to see a man at the peak of the mast naked and he seemed to be talking on phone” said Pastor Benjamin Miriti of Brotherhood Christ Church.

Confirming the incident, Embu county Administration Police Commandant Daudi Muhamed said police who were on patrol were alerted that two men were trying to gain access into the compound hosting the mast. On arriving at the scene, one of the men jumped into the compound while the other was left at the gate where he was arrested.

Police tried to plead with the man to climb down but he declined and instead kept on advancing higher until he reached at the highest point where he removed his clothes and shoes and threw them down to the police.

“He started removing his clothes one after the other after climbing up to the peak of the tower. He left his friend at the gate and we have him in custody,” said Mr. Muhamed.

By noon, the man was still on top of the mast.

The police boss said investigations are underway to establish the intention of the two men as they wait for the other one to climb down.
