Drama as rowdy youth interrupt Muranga county assembly operations

Drama ensued in Murang’a town after a group of rowdy goons pitched camp outside the Murang’a County Assembly blocking the Members of County Assembly (MCAs) from accessing the premises.

The alleged hired goons pitched camp with intensions to disrupt the operations of the house which was tabling a motion of impeachment against the County Executive Committee Member in charge of Finance, ICT and Planning Mr. George Kamau for alleged incompetence and mismanagement of county resources.

Police officers manning the gate to the County Assembly had a tough time trying to contain the situation after recovering alcoholics from the Ihura Stadium Rehabilitation Centre joined the scuffle forcing the security officers to use tear gas to disperse them.

The unrest comes just days after a report released by the Murang’a Executive Committee Member for Finance and Planning George Kamau indicated that the county owes suppliers and contractors more than Ksh 2.5 billion from 2013.

In a press briefing, the Murang’a County Assembly, through Leader of Majority Peter Kihungi, condemned the incident where the goons disrupted the operation of the house for hours before the situation was contained.

The assembly allied fears that the government is unable to pay the debts adding that the county has already allocated Ksh 9 billion to address such debts.

Mr. Kihungi said the county assembly has been in the frontline in scrutinizing the expenditure of the county government following questionable allocations of resources to programmes that have not been accounted for.
