Draw lessons from party primaries, IEBC told

A section of religious leaders from the North Rift region now say that the Independent Elections and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) have many lessons to learn from the just concluded party primaries in order to conduct a free, fair and credible August 8 General Election.

The clergy, under the banner of the National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK), have expressed dissatisfaction in the manner in which political parties conducted their nominations exercise across the country, condemning the violence that was witnessed in some parts of the country.

Led by Bishop Christopher Ruto of the Anglican Church of Kenya – Eldoret Diocese, the leaders now want the electoral body not to repeat the mistakes made by political parties in the nominations while pleading with Kenyan to maintain peace before and after the August poll.

“Those who lost in nominations should accept defeat and unite with the winners so as to work together for the sake of a peaceful Kenya. We should also encourage all women aspirants and give them the respect that their male counterparts enjoy,” said Bishop Ruto.

They blamed the parties of favoring some aspirants at the expense of democracy that is supposed to speak the voice of Kenyans, warning IEBC to shun from repeating the same.

According to them, the police should maintain peace and order evenly without any ill-intention, while accusing them of allowing some chaotic meetings of particular aspirants to prevail.

The religious leaders were speaking in Eldoret Town on Wednesday, May 3.
