Driving schools threatens to sue NTSA over new curriculum

The Kenya Driving Schools Association (KDSA) has now threatened to sue the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) for contempt of court over failure to stop implementation of new driving schools’ curriculum, despite a court order barring the move.

The association says NTSA has dismissed the existence of a court order issued at the Nakuru High Court barring it from the implementation of the curriculum, until the case is heard and determined.

Speaking during the Driving Schools Association stakeholders meeting here in Nairobi, the Association’s Chairman John Mwatha and Secretary General Lucas Okaka demanded representation in the NTSA board of management. They asked for three positions, arguing that this involvement would ensure their grievances are fully addressed.

NTSA and the Driving Schools Association have been at loggerheads over the introduction and implementation of a new curriculum, which stipulated new requirements for the institutions.

Under the new rules, driving schools are required to have at least 1.7 acre training yard, a classroom measuring 8 meters by 6 meters, the replacement of traffic police by civilians as examiners, and a comprehensive insurance cover for the training vehicles among others new requirements.
