Drought Hits Tana River County

The residents have been forced to walk for miles in search of water and pasture.

Some even have taken a risk of invading national reserves in search for pasture to save their livestock.

“The problem with that is that when you are caught by the game reservists you are slapped with a fine of Kshs. 2,000 yet we can’t even afford,” a resident said.

Tana River governor Hussein Dado who visited the area has appealed to pastoralists to share resources to avoid conflicts and animosity.

Dado has also urged KWS to allow pastoralists to graze their livestock in the reserves during this desperate moment of looming drought.

The county government in partnership with NGOs has moved swiftly to sink boreholes and issue relief food to save the situation

Last week, Kenya Red cross revealed that over 1.6 million people are facing the bite of the current looming food shortage and drought that has hit several parts of the country.
