Duale blasts MP over proposed ‘Probox’ Presidency Bill

Majority Leader Aden Duale has criticised a Bill proposing the re-introduction of the Office of Prime Minister and one 7-year presidential term.

“The Bill by Kassait Kamket (Tiaty MP) will never see the light of day,” Duale said in an exclusive interview with Citizen TV  on Tuesday.

He was referring to the proposed Bill that terms the current presidential system as a ‘Ferrari’ one.

According to Kamket, it is not beneficial to wananchi as they apparently prefer a ‘Probox’ presidency.

In the Bill, Kamket also proposes that the office of the Deputy President be scrapped. Further, it seeks to have the election date of the President, MPs, MCAs and Governors changed to the second Tuesday of December every fifth year.

Speaking to Citizen TV on Tuesday, Duale said the main agenda of the Jubilee administration is to focus on the Big Four Agenda and not take the country into another campaign mode.

A seemingly irate Duale further accused the Tiaty MP of promoting his proposed Bill in political rallies, funerals and media talk shows and instead urged him to take it through the proper channels.

The Majority Leader further advised Kamket to consult with other MPs before making pronouncements.

Earlier on, Kamket had sought to “demystify” the proposed Bill saying it is aimed at ensuring Kenya has renewed leadership every five years. “What we have now is a vehicle for two,” he said during an interview on Citizen Extra.

Kamket is on record urging Deputy President William Ruto and his allies to embrace the Bill.

He claims that the DP risks failure similar to that experienced by Raila Odinga who had his eye on State House but never got in.

“Enactment of the Bill will foster inclusivity in the leadership of the country and proper accountability of the government to Parliament,” reads the Bill.

Kamket also proposes for the composition of the current Senate to be made up of one man and one woman elected by the Members of County Assembly.

“This will make it a total of 94 members alongside six members representing the youth and persons with disabilities,” it reads.
