Duale: MPs will not be intimidated by constitutional commissions

Members of Parliament have dismissed threats by the Constitution Implementation Commission (CIC) to move to court over the rejection of appointment of Dr Monica Juma as the Secretary to the Cabinet.

Led by the Majority Leader in the National Assembly Aden Duale, the MPs have vowed to continue fighting for their space and continue exercising the constitutional powers bestowed on them by the Constitution of Kenya 2010.

“I want to make it clear that the National Assembly cannot be intimidated by a constitutional body,” said Duale.

“CIC should know that threats cannot be used to solve a problem.”

Duale’s sentiments come just a day after CIC threatened to seek court’s opinion on whether Members of Parliament are justified to reject nomination or appointment of a qualified person.

Nominated MP Abdi Noor warned CIC against interfering with the operations of the National Assembly.

Rarienda MP Eng Nicholas Gumbo said that the legislators have no regrets whatsoever in rejecting the appointment of Monica Juma.

Dr Juma was rejected following claims that she had written a letter complaining on the frequent visits by MPs to her office seeking transfers for civil servants.
