Duale wants Matibas Ksh.945M compensation paid immediately

National Assembly Majority Leader Aden Duale wants the Ksh.945 million compensation awarded to the late veteran politician Kenneth Matiba paid with speed.

Speaking in Parliament as MPs paid tribute to the late Matiba, Duale asked the Budget and Appropriations Committee to seek guidance from the Attorney General and have the amount factored in this year’s supplementary budget.

The second supplementary budget was tabled in the House last week.

Mr. Matiba, who died on Sunday at the Karen Hospital, was last year awarded Ksh.504 million as damages for unlawful detention and torture by the KANU regime in 1990.

The compensation was, however, increased to Ksh.945 million after Matiba’s lawyer cited a collapsed business empire, increased lawyer rates, time spent in court and huge medical bills incurred after a stroke he suffered while in detention.

However, according to Lawyer Wanyiri Kihoro, the government is yet to compensate the multi-party democracy hero as directed by the court.

“The court decided the matter nine months ago but he (Matiba) was not paid. I waited for my compensation from the Government for 24 years. It was only paid when I issued notice of going to the Supreme Court,” Mr. Kihoro, who is also a former MP, told Citizen TV on Monday.

Duale also urged politicians to stop politicising the death of the fallen multi-party democracy hero.

He asked the family of the deceased to warn politicians against talking politics during Matiba’s burial.

Meanwhile, the government has constituted a committee to carry out preparations for Matiba’s burial.

In a statement to newsrooms, Government Spokesperson Eric Kiraithe said the committee which will also comprise of Matiba’s family members will be chaired by the Head of Public Service, Dr. Joseph Kinyua.
