EACC: 47 high profile corruption cases ready for prosecution

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) Deputy CEO Michael Mubea has defended the body from claims that they are not effective in the war on corruption.

His defense comes in the wake of EACC being locked out of the fresh National Youth Service (NYS) scandal probe which is being handled by the police and DPP.

Speaking during an interview on Citizen TV’s Sunday Live, Mubea said the agency is active on the war on corruption claiming that 47 cases involving prominent figures in government have already been filed and are ready for prosecution.

President Uhuru Kenyatta’s speech on Madaraka day where he ordered multi-agencies to move quickly and build cases for the prosecution of corrupt people did not mention EACC.

According to Mubea’s interpretation of the president’s remarks, the Director of Public Prosecutions and Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI) are new in office and need instructions while EACC is already working.

“Since the DPP came into office, we have filed 47 cases for prosecution. My interpretation of what the president said is that DCI and DPP are new and they all need instructions,” he said.

EACC exclusion from the multi-agency team’s probe of corruption cases has raised questions whether other agencies have confidence in the anti-graft watchdog.

The multi-agency team probing the loss of Ksh9 billion at the NYS has representatives from the DCI, NIS, Assets Recovery Authority (ARA), Financial Report Centre (FRC), Kenya Revenue Authority(KRA) and the DPP.
