EACC chair nominee outlines ambitious plan to fight corruption

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) chair nominee Phillip Kinusu has vowed to reevaluate the existing tactics used in the fight against corruption and deal with any challenges that may arise.

Speaking during a vetting session conducted by the Justice and Legal Affairs Committee on Wednesday, Kinusu said he would study factors that have impeded the fight against corruption in his first 100 days in office, whether it is linked to political interference or lack of coordination, and put up measures to deal with the challenges.

He added that he would be stern in fighting graft and wade off political interference from all quarters, including the president.

“I will be stern in the fight against corruption without tolerating interference from any quarters,” he said.

“EACC will, in collaboration with other agencies, investigate cases of corruption and forward the findings to the Director of Public Prosecution for necessary action,” he said.

He further revealed that he would ensure factual reporting of graft cases, saying unlike in the past he will ensure the media does not report on corruption allegations but results of cases at hand and those whose suspects have been prosecuted.

Kinusu said he would be a team player at the EACC to ensure the commission delivers on its mandate, adding that with the proper anti-graft structures already in place, the fight against corruption should be feasible.

Other nominated EACC commissioners who appeared before the committee chaired by Ainabkoi MP Samuel Chepkonga include Dabar Abdi Maalim, Philip Mwaniki, Sophia Lepuchirit and Rose Mghoi Mtambo Macharia.

In his submission, Mwaniki said EACC should embrace lifestyle audit for public servants to help prevent unfair acquisition of wealth and corruption.

“Kenya is one of the countries with the best laws in procurement and tendering but the issue has always been how to implement these laws,” he said.

He urged Kenyans to put their trust in the commission and support it in the fight against corruption by offering relevant information and evidence that may lead to the arrest of those involved.
