EACC Credibility Tainted, Claims Murkomen

EACC Credibility Tainted, Claims Murkomen

Speaking during the Cheche show on Citizen TV Wednesday morning, Murkomen said that the anti graft body takes years on cases almost as if they were hoarding the cases in order to use the information against you.

“EACC takes too long to carry out investigations almost as though they are hoarding,” said Murkomen.

The senator further added that he had lost faith in the EACC, saying that it had failed to deliver on its mandate.

“The credibility of EACC is damaging the credibility of the resource,” said he.

Speaking at the same show, Dagoretti MP Dennis Waweru said that if the EACC commissioners are unable to deliver on their mandate they should give room to other Kenyans who are willing and able to take up the challenge.

The legislator also criticised the Director of Public Prosecutions, Keriako Tobiko, saying he had not successfully prosecuted a corruption case in years.

“I have an issue with the DPP because he is not up to the task,” he quipped.

MOB JUSTICE

In the DPP’s defence, Murkomen said that Mr Tobiko needed to maintain his credibility to the public by avoiding what he termed as ‘mob justice’.

“It is important for the DPP to keep a level head and not be involved in bulk prosecutions and taint his credibility,” said he.

The senator said that it was important to increase the capacity of the DPP’s office by hiring more prosecutors across the country so that more corruption cases can be tried.

Murkomen also said that it was the duty of the EACC to ascertain that the names presented to the president in the list of shame had a case to answer.

He further added that it was an easy thing to ascertain this before presenting the list because it would be unfair to indict persons that are innocent or have no case to answer.

“Not everyone you feel that you don't like is a criminal,” he quipped.

Senator Murkomen noted that since the credibility of the EACC was not certain, the country will have to depend on the investigations by the DPP on the list of shame.

INVEST IN GOOD LEADERSHIP

On his part, Dagoretti MP Dennis Waweru said that those mentioned in the list of shame must step aside, not just from the commission being investigated but from all Parliamentary commissions until their names are cleared.

The legislator further noted that to end corruption, Kenyans must invest in good leadership.

He said that the electorate should ask themselves where the money being dished out during elections comes from.

“We have to invest in good leadership as a people and unless we get to that level we cannot fight corruption,” he said.

On his part, Murkomen said that the responsibility to discipline leaders lies with the people.
