EACC gets new boss as Eliud Wabukala gets Parliamentary nod

Former Anglican Archbishop Eliud Wabukala is now the Ethics and Anti Corruption Commission chairman after Parliament approved his nomination in accordance with the provisions of Section 10 (3) of the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission Act, 2011 and Section 8 of the Public Appointments (Parliamentary Approval) Act, 2011.

In a special sitting of the House, the Members of Parliament approved the first clergyman in the country to hold the position and sixth holder of the post since its formation with House Speaker, Justin Muturi, expected to forward his name to President Uhuru Kenyatta for formal appointment.

Wabukala will then be formally sworn in by President Uhuru Kenyatta highly likely tomorrow.

This comes just hours after the National Assembly adopted a report by the Justice and Legal Affairs Committee of the National Assembly (JLAC) approving Wabukala as the EACC boss.

Wabukala who appeared before JLAC on January 5, 2017 for vetting told the Parliamentarians that should he be approved to head the EACC, he would perform his duties independently without interference from external forces.

The former head of ACK further told the Samuel Chepkonga-led committee that he would bring back public trust to the anti-graft body.

Wabukala will now replace Philip Kinisu who was forced out of office after it emerged that his family company, Esaki Limited, transacted business worth Ksh 35 million with the National Youth Service (NYS).

The position of EACC chairman became vacant following the resignation of Philip Kinisu on the 31st of August after he was implicated in the Ksh 791 million NYS scandal.

Wabukala’s demeanor and seemingly gentle nature already has had some questions raised over whether he would have what it takes to slay the dragon of corruption.

Wabukala is now expected to among other things uphold the commission’s vision  of a corruption free society that upholds integrity and rule of law.
