EACC grills Health CS Mailu over Ksh5bn theft

Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission detectives on Thursday grilled Health Cabinet Secretary Cleopa Mailu for more than six hours in a closed-door meeting over the alleged misappropriation of more than Ksh.5 billion at the ministry.

The CS emerged from the inquiry shortly after midday but declined to answer questions from journalists.

He, however, insisted that he gave the detectives all the information they requested from him, adding that he is ready to cooperate with the anti-graft body to unearth the Afya House scam.

This comes just one day after Ministry of Health Principal Secretary Dr Nicholas Muraguri appeared before the same commission where he refuted reports in the media that more than Ksh.5 billion has been lost at the ministry.

Mr Muraguri asserted that the amount that cannot be account for is Ksh.3 billion.

Meanwhile, police used teargas to disperse civil society demonstrators gathered at Uhuru Park with the aim of proceeding to Afya House to demand the resignation of Health Ministry officials implicated in the corruption scandal.
