EACC kicks off MCA leadership training following a string of misconducts

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has launched a training programme on ethics and leadership, targeting Members of County Assemblies.

The move comes in the wake of a series of misconducts witnessed in a number of county assemblies across the country.

According Patrick Owiny, the commission’s Deputy Director of Ethics and Leadership, state officers are supposed to adhere to Chapter Six of the Kenyan Constitution and should not compromise any public or private interests.

“This is just the beginning of various interactions with various county assemblies, essentially we’re here to sensitize them on issues of Chapter Six in the constitution. This to us is preventive because MCAs and state officers should know their role and conduct both in private and public affairs,” said Owiny.

He was speaking during a training session for Siaya County Assembly MCAs from the Power and Privileges Committee in Kisumu County.

Siaya County Assembly Speaker George Okode chimed in saying the programme is meant to enlighten people on the existence of the law as citizens.

“You are a human being before you are an MCA, and you have your personal conduct to show that you are an MCA. Individual persons should take individual responsibilities for their actions. We shouldn’t have a blanket condemnation if somebody breaks the mess, he is an MCA yes but more importantly, he is a misbehaved Kenyan,” said Okode.
