EACC probing dubious land buying companies in Nanyuki

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has moved to probe the dealings of four land buying companies within the outskirts of Nanyuki Town in Laikipia County.

The company’s directors are said to have been involved in dubious deals that have seen shareholders lose millions of shillings.

Among the companies being probed are Nyarigunu, Mwicwiri, Timau and Gitugi land buying companies.

They all own land estimated to cover over 5,000 hectares.

On Thursday, EACC officials led by its vice chairperson, Ms Sophia Lepuchirit, and the chairman of the Enforcement Committee in the Commission, Mwaniki Gachoka, visited the land where they gave a directive that no further land would be subdivided until a probe was conducted and land grabbers brought to book.

The officials gave a one month amnesty to current and former directors of the said companies to surrender land they had grabbed or face the full force of the law.

They regretted that issues of land were emotive and called on individuals who have grabbed public land and whose documents are not authentic to ensure they surrender back to their rightful owners or the government.

The officials also surrendered to Laikipia Governor Joshua Irungu three acres of public land they had recovered from land grabbers.

“We want to assure the public that there will be no more land grabbing the former and current directors and that is why the commission has moved in to probe all these land dealing. The members of the companies have written to us and that is why we have taken this action,” said Mwaniki.
