EACC recovers Ksh 9B in assets from corruption suspects

The Ethics and Anti Corruption Commission (EACC) says it has recovered assets worth nine billion shillings over the last ten years and 600 million shillings in cash.

According to EACC chair Philip Kinisu, the commission has investigated more than 400 cases and is currently giving more prominence to cases of public interest.

Kinisu says investigations are underway on the 175 graft suspects whose names were presented to Parliament by the President Uhuru Kenyatta last year with 161 having been charged in court.

The EACC chair, who was speaking when he appeared before the Parliamentary Legal Affairs Committee, further assured that the commission will decisively handle the 791 million shillings scam at the National Youth Service (NYS) after recent revelations by former Devolution CS Anne Waiguru and businesswoman Josephine Kabura.

Last month, EACC Chief Executive Officer Halakhe Waqo was summoned to appear before the National Assembly’s Justice and Legal Affairs Committee chaired by Samuel Chepkonga to respond to claims that his office had been used to sanitize corruption suspects.

The National Assembly has since raised questions on what informed Waqo’s decision to clear Waiguru over graft allegations leveled against her in a letter he wrote to Head of Public Service and State House Chief of Staff Joseph Kinyua.

With pressure mounting, Waqo had earlier said that the commission only cleared Waiguru of four other cases, one in which former NYS Director General Nelson Githinji has been charged with abuse of office and spending Ksh 490,000 to service his personal vehicle.

Though EACC insists Waiguru was not yet off the hook over the Ksh 791M NYS scandal, it did not give details of the cases it cleared her of.

Kinisu’s announcement, however, comes amid reports that the anti-graft CEO Halakhe Waqo could be kicked out of office through a Parliamentary process over alleged cover ups in grand corruption investigations handled by his office.
