EALA MP Simon Mbugua and Sonkos Chief of Staff grilled over planned chaos

East Africa Legislative Assembly (EALA) MP Simon Mbugua and Governor Mike Sonko’s Chief of Staff Peter Kamau Mugo were Tuesday evening questioned by DCI detectives on suspicion of distributing money to youth to cause chaos during Wednesday’s court proceedings during which a ruling on the governor’s bail application is expected.

The two recorded statements at the Nairobi Area DCI office before later being freed.

Governor Sonko was admitted to the Kenyatta National Hospital after he was reportedly taken ill on Monday night.

He had been treated last night at the Kamiti Prison health facility after he left the court but was later rushed to Kenyatta Hospital.

The ailing Nairobi Governor will spend Tuesday night at the Kenyatta National Hospital under tight security with prison personnel being deployed to man the ward the embattled governor has been admitted to.

According to Sonko’s doctor, the Governor suffered possible cracked ribs during a scuffle with police officers when he was arrested in Voi on Friday.

Visiting the governor in hospital has been highly restricted with only his wife and two out of 12 of his lawyers allowed to visit him at specific times in his ward in KNH’s private wing.

His defence team led by lawyer Cecil Miller, on Monday  argued before Anti-corruption Court Chief Magistrate Douglas Ogoti that the embattled governor was sick and required urgent medical attention following his encounter with security personnel who arrested him.

Even as Sonko fights to have the court release him on bail, the prosecution says the governor is a flight risk and being the city governor, witnesses in the case who work under him will be intimidated.
