Eateries in Nakuru record losses as biting water shortage continues

Revenues from most eateries in Nakuru County are plummeting as a result of the biting drought that has led to an acute shortage of water.

Speaking to Citizen Digital, Kaptembwo Inn butchery proprietor Jeremiah Yegon said he is spending a lot of money buying water to maintain high standards of hygiene at his eatery, adding that it is the worst shortage he has experienced in 14 years.

“We buy a 20-litre jerry can between Ksh30 of Ksh40,” he said, adding that he spends Ksh600 per day on water.

This comes barely a week after the Nairobi Water and Sewerage Company (NAWASCO) directed all car wash service vendors using treated water to cease operations immediately as Nairobi braces for shortage due to ongoing drought.

The firm’s Managing Director, Philip Gichuki, cited recent water distribution schedule and Kenya Meteorological Department’s reports on recent weather patterns for drastic action.

“This is aimed at water conservation as the vendors use treated water to wash vehicles which is prejudicial during these difficult times,” said Mr Gichuki.

Mr Gichuki also issued warning of stern measures to be taken against operators and Car Wash owners who flout the order.

The measure comes barely two weeks after the firm started rationing water in the city beginning January 1, 2017.
