Education ministry not ready to roll out new curriculum in January

The Ministry of Education has announced that they will not roll out the new curriculum in January as expected.

According to Education CS Amina Mohammed, this is to allow extensive consultation with all stakeholders and ensure that proper infrastructure is in place before the roll out.

“We have to make sure that everything is in place, enough teachers are trained… make sure that the books are the right ones…” she said.

The CS further added that the decision was reached after an internal evaluation and they are now waiting for results from the pilot phase.

She noted that after a wider evaluation, the ministry will hold another meeting to agree on a timetable for the roll out.

CS Amina also sought to clarify that no child would be affected following the postponement.

“Those who were to move to Grade Four were the pilot but will instead move to Standard Three but it will not affect their progress,” she said.

In April 2017, the government launched a pilot programme for the new 2-6-6-3 curriculum system of education.

This was in a bid to replace the 8-4-4 system and involved 470 primary and pre-primary schools countrywide.

The move to change the education curriculum came after the current system was slammed for being too exam-oriented.

Complaints from different quarters had it that the old system exerted undue pressure on learners.

The new 2-6-6-3 system instead proposed a practical framework that nurtures competencies of learners based on their talent.
