Education stakeholders want strict measures to address unrest in schools

Education stakeholders have called for the formation of integrated discipline management strategy to address the rising cases of unrest in schools.

The stakeholders from Embu County, say there is need for schools’ management to be adequately training on mechanisms that help tackle unrest by students.

The Embu County Education Board chairman, Stephen Njoka, called on the government to re-introduce corporal punishment saying it is the only ammunition for principal and teachers against errant learners.

Under the Basic Education Act, Njoka said that principals are denied powers even to expel the indisciplined student thus making it difficult to address cases of unrest.

Embu County Executive Committee Member for Education Jamleck Muturi called for re-introduction of approved schools where indisciplined students can be taken for correction under maximum supervision.

On his part, Embu Senator Lenny Kivuti cited laxity by schools’ heads as the major contributing factor to ongoing arson cases.

The leaders, who were speaking in Embu Town during a stakeholders meeting, challenged principals to take discipline among learners seriously.

Kivuti said the principals are the managers of their institution and they should not sit and watch as schools go up in flames.
