Egerton University student among two arrested for defrauding couple Ksh.716K

An Egerton University student is among two suspects who have been arrested for allegedly defrauding a couple Ksh.716,000 in a sim swap scam in June this year.

Sabina Evelyn Nyanumba, the student, and 19-year-old Paul Nyabero Kilenya were nabbed by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Njoro, Nakuru County.

According to a statement from the DCI, the victim is said to have received a call from a new number and made to believe that she was being engaged by a Safaricom customer care operator.

She was reportedly lured into disclosing her personal information, which the suspected fraudsters are then said to have used to swindle Ksh.296,652 from her M-Pesa and Cooperative Bank accounts.

The fraudsters then went on to the woman’s husband’s M-Pesa and Cooperative Bank accounts from where they withdrew Ksh.420,570.

“Forensic data analysis by Kiambu-based Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau detectives working jointly with DCI liaison officers at Safaricom headquarters led detectives to the two suspects, from whom the mobile handset used in defrauding the victims was also recovered,” read the statement.
