Eight prison warders suspended over Kibos jail break

Eight Prison Warders from Kibos Prison have been suspended following an escape of four capital offence inmates from the heavily guarded Prison in Kisumu.

According to the Nyanza Region Prisons Commander Amos Misik, the eight had been suspended to allow investigations into the prison break.

The officer who was on duty when the inmates escaped is among those who have been interdicted following preliminary investigations.

According to Mr. Misik, the escapees broke out of prisons by cutting the window grills of their cell, before climbing over the five meter-high prison perimeter wall using blankets and sheets.

The four – Kennedy Wesonga who is serving life for defilement, Keneth Lekesho sentenced to 20 years for defilement, Salim Sifuna alias Masibo who is on death row for three counts of robbery with violence and Douglas Onyancha who is serving for murder and robbery with violence – are believed to have used a hack saw to cut the metallic grills leaving behind two fellow inmates.

Misik now says that a massive security operation around Kisumu and its environs is currently underway to re-arrest the criminals.

On his part Kisumu county Commissioner John Elung’at said that that a team of officers has been dispatched to the ground to help track them down.

Police and prison officers have intensified their search in nearby sugar plantations using sniffer dogs.
