Elders bid farewell to Luo leader

Hundreds of mourners thronged the home of former Luo Council of Elders chairman Meshack Riaga Ogalo at Sikri in Homa Bay County on Sunday.

Elders from the Kaya, Njuri Njeke, Kalenjin, Suba, Kisii, Nabongo and Kikuyu communities joined mourners during the burial ceremony.

Speakers at the burial ceremony described the late Meshack Riaga Ogalo as a person who had no boundaries and unified people regardless of their tribal affiliations.

They said his death marks a new beginning in uniting all communities noting that the Luo elder will be missed by many.

Local politicians present included Kisumu governor Jack Ranguma, Homa Bay governor Cyprian Awiti, nominated Senator Elizabeth Ongoro, Suba Member of Parliament Milly Odhiambo and Kasipul Member of Parliament Silvance Osewe.

They described the late Ogalo as a person who worked tirelessly in uniting all communities in the country, sentiments that were echoed by leaders from the National Council of Elders.

The late Meshack Riaga Ogalo died Wednesday night at the Kenyatta National Hospital after suffering heart complications.

Ogalo was laid to rest at his Sikri home in Oyugis, Homa Bay County.
