Elders decry grabbing of 655ha land in Uasin Gishu

A group of elderly men in Uasin Gishu County are calling on the National Lands Commission to intervene in a case where their land was allegedly grabbed.

Speaking to Citizen Digital on Monday at Wendani farm in Kapseret Constituency, the elders claimed that the land totaling 655 hectares was bought under farmers co-operative society 50 years ago but has since has been grabbed by people with connections in the government.

Led by Wairimu Nguguna, Steven Komen, Dickson Kakai and Robert Ndirangu, the elders said their efforts to seek assistance from relevant government authorities have been fruitless, adding that they lost the original title deed of the farm after a senior government official took it promising to settle the issue.

One of the residents said that the land was grabbed during the 2007/2008 post election violence when some of the inhabitants of the land were evicted by their neighbours.

They noted that it has been difficult to reach the official who has the original title deed, adding that they’re living like squatters on their own land.
