Eldoret man accused of assaulting wife released on Ksh.300K bond

An Eldoret Court on Monday released a man suspected to have brutally assaulted and disfigured his wife on a surety bond of Ksh.300,000.

Appearing before Eldoret Chief Magistrate Charles Obulutsa, Naftali Shamo Luzuli was charged with committing the barbaric act against his spouse – Vallary Mwendu Masibo – on August 9, 2018, at Kipkaren Estate in Eldoret.

The accused denied the charges and the case was set for hearing on August 20, 2018.

Speaking to press after the hearing, Masibo said the accused, who works in a slaughter house in Eldoret town, has been battering her frequently.

“I have known this guy for five months and this is the fifth time he’s beating me. I have been persevering but this time was worse. When he gets drunk, he becomes mad and violent,” she said.

She, however, expressed optimism at finding justice.

The accused, who was arrested on Sunday in Eldoret, is reported to have brutally assaulted his wife over Ksh.500 that he had left for dinner.

The woman was taken to the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital after neighbours called the police when they heard her screams.

Speaking to a local media outlet, Masibo said the husband came home drunk on that fateful day, locked all doors and started beating her up, even using a cooking stick at some point.

The incident has drawn the ire of Kenyans on social media, with flamboyant lawyer Donald Kipkorir stating that the suspect does not deserve to be taken to court but that “his neighbors in his estate in Eldoret should be allowed to beat him to a pulp.”
