Election disputes to be resolved 14 days after filing, CJ Maraga

Chief Justice David Maraga has announced that electoral disputes should be filed within 28 days after election results are announced and resolved in the courts within 14 days.

Speaking while launching the Bench Book on Election Dispute Resolution, CJ Maraga said that the judiciary is adequately prepared to efficiently handle all electoral disputes, saying this has been proven in the handling of recent poll cases.

“We have engaged parliament and some of our proposals have been adopted, most notably all electoral disputes should be filed within 28 days after election results are announced,the Judiciary is committed to ensure that these cases are resolved within 14 days,” Chief Justice Maraga said.

He noted that the Judiciary has efficiently handled disputes in the last three months stressing that all major players including the ruling Jubilee party and the opposition have lost cases and according to him that serves as an indication of the courts impartiality.

Justice Msagha Mbogoli, who chairs the Judiciary’s Committee on Elections, says that judges handling election disputes have been effectively trained to handling rows that will arise from the polls slated for Tuesday, August 8.
