Election of Lamu West MP nullified

The High Court in Malindi on Wednesday nullified the election of Lamu West MP Stanley Muthama.

Justice Weldon Korir ruled that that the August 8 election was marred by massive irregularities and illegalities.

Justice Korir ordered Mr. Muthama and the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to pay Mr. Amana Ksh.1.5 million each as costs for the case.

The judge also ordered the electoral commission to conduct a fresh election within 60 days.

Mr. Muthama’s rival, Rishad Amana of the Orange Democratic Party (ODM) had moved to court to challenge Muthama’s victory claiming that the election was marred by irregularities adding that there was inconsistency in the tallying of the votes.

The court, on January 14 ordered for a recount and scrutiny of votes in 11 polling stations.
