Election protests in opposition strongholds
Youth in opposition strongholds of Migori, Nyanza, Nyamira, Homabay, Siaya and Kibera engaged police in running battles as they barricaded roads lit bonfires protesting Thursday’s repeat presidential poll.
The youth defied NASA leader Raila Odinga’s call to his supporters to boycott the election which he termed as ‘sham’.
Several polling stations either did not open or were empty with the few clerks on call doing nothing but wait for people who were never coming.
In Kisumu, one person was shot dead while others were injured during the protests. Twenty people were injured, five of them with gunshot wounds, and were taken to the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital. One protester died while undergoing treatment.
Acting Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i gave security assurance saying that there is sufficient deployment of security.
