Electricity Experts Warn Of Fake Quality Cables

They warned that this could lead to major factories and home accidents if the trend is not checked and the fake imports blocked.

According to the experts, the proliferation of the cables mainly from the East, has adversely affected the sector and electricity connection in the country.

This emerged during an open day for the multi-million ROKA Industries in Naivasha.

According to the Roka Industries CEO Njoroge Kahugi, the imports had affected the market negatively.

Njoroge warned that though the imports were cheap, there were consequences with some of cables not strong enough to fully supply electricity.

The sentiments were echoed by the company MD Joan Wanjiku, who warned consumers against taking chances with electricity gadgets.

A senior engineer with Kengen Peter Chege warned that the use of low quality power cables posed a threat to many industries and homes.

He said that currently the country's power demand was 1,500mw against a supply of 1,900mw.

Chege said that Kengen was encouraging Kenyans to use more power and setup industries as there was ample supply of electricity in the country.

"Power demand in the country goes down after 9pm and plans are underway for the creation of an industrial park so that the excess power can be utilized," he said.

Chege added that Kengen and Kenya Power were constructing more power sub-stations in the country to address electricity demands by industries.
