Elgeyo Marakwet County Assembly adjourns over insecurity

The County Assembly of Elgeyo Marakwet has indefinitely adjourned its public sittings meant to discuss the 2017/2018 budget due to the insecurity situation in the county.

In a consensus by all the Members of Elgeyo Marakwet County Assembly, they agreed that it is important to ensure the security of residents and that the sittings will resume when the situation have been contained.

According to the County Speaker Albert Kipkogei Kochei, the sittings have been put aside so as to concentrate on rescuing the more alarming situation of insecurity and bandit attacks in the county.

“It is not logical for us to sit in a parliament discussing a budget for people who are vulnerable to attacks and therefore not safe,” reasoned the county speaker.

Kochei was speaking to Citizen Digital yesterday in Eldoret Town.

Reports indicate that more than four wards in the county have been affected by bandit attacks and the county assembly has since written to the Inspector General of Police, Joseph Boinnet, demanding a meeting with him to discuss the security measures in the area.

The county government now risks missing on the funds to steer the county through an election year as the deadline for the passing of the budget is on the 31st of March.

Some locals have abandoned their homes for fear of been victims after a man was shot dead and his head chopped off on Sunday night.
