Elite, ‘radicalised’ cop arrested in Mombasa

A General Service Unit (GSU) police officer attached to the elite Recce Squad was on Friday arrested at a house in Mombasa’s Kizingoni area after he allegedly abandoned his job for unknown reasons over a month ago.

Joseph Kariuki is said to have abandoned his job and fled after three rifles and bullets were discovered at his Ruiru home in Nairobi.

According to Mombasa Urban Police OCPD, Lucas Ogara, Kariuki was arrested in Kizingo by Flying Squad officers at around 1.00am following a tip-off from members of the public.

The man is currently being grilled by police before being transferred to Nairobi.

Police launched a search for Kariuki following intelligence reports that he had been radicalised by the Al Shabaab fighters and was planning an attack.
