Embattled Moses Kuria summoned by CID over hate speech

Gatundu South Member of Parliament Moses Kuria has been summoned at the CID headquarters to record a statement over allegations of incitement to violence.

Kuria is alleged to have incited youth from his constituency to slash – using pangas – those opposed to the National Youth Service (NYS) programme.

Kuria, who is not new to such controversies, caused an uproar from across the political and social divide with his utterances leading to the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) calling for his immediate prosecution.

NCIC – through chairman Francis Ole Kaparo – wrote to the Cabinet secretary for Interior Major Gen. (Rtd.) Joseph Nkaissery, Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinett and the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) Keriako Tobiko seeking for expeditious prosecution of the legislator.

In his (Kuria’s) address, made in both English and his native language, the legislator said: “That is why I told you to come with your pangas. It is not for slashing only. Anyone who opposed NYS should be slashed.”

The NCIC’s statements followed hours after Kuria’s TNA party called for the prosecution of the legislator over inciting comments he made in a rally on Tuesday.

The party, through its chairman Johnson Sakaja termed Kuria’s utterances inciting adding that the party dissociates themselves from the legislator’s position.

The summon comes even as the DPP says he has made an application of urgency to the court seeking the cancellation of Kuria’s bail.

The DPP indicated that Kuria will further be charged for separate criminal charges relating to the latest utterances.
