Embobut Squatters Homes Torched

The squatters claim that the fire, which burned down almost 100 of their thatch roofed houses, was started by Kenya Forest Forces (KFF) officers.

However, Marakwet Ecosystem Conservator, Alfred Nyaswapu, denied the allegation that his officers were responsible for burning down the houses.

This comes after the government gave the residents a 21 day notice in December 2013 to leave the forest.

The High Court in Eldoret had last year ordered suspension of the ejection from the forest until February 6 2014, when a case filed by parties on behalf of the community is heard.

Each of the 2,874 squatters received Sh400, 000 as compensation to enable them acquire alternative land, but did not move even after the notice expired.

The squatters say that although they have been paid, they need more time to find other places to settle.

Explaining why the notice cannot be extended, Local County Commissioner Arthur Osiya said that he is bound by the directive given by President Uhuru Kenyatta for the squatters to be evicted and the forest rehabilitated.
